Northern Marmara Motorway is one of the most significant transportation infrastructure projects in Türkiye, extending along the northern corridor of Istanbul. Maintenance and operation activities on the motorway began in 2018, and with the phased opening of its sections, the project reached its current integrated structure within approximately 3.5 years. With a total length of 415 kilometres, the motorway strengthens the transportation network between Europe and Asia and plays a critical role in enhancing regional mobility.
Equipped with intelligent transportation systems, advanced engineering solutions, and modern operational technologies, the Northern Marmara Motorway serves as a strategic transportation corridor that reduces urban traffic congestion in Istanbul while improving logistics efficiency and accelerating transit transportation.
Traffic and operational management of the motorway is carried out through the Main Control Centre located in Garipçe, Sarıyer (Istanbul) and three major Maintenance and Operation Centres. Through the fibre-optic infrastructure, dome cameras, incident detection cameras, variable message signs, traffic sensors, meteorological stations, and tunnel safety systems are monitored and managed 24/7. In addition, tunnel safety is ensured through emergency call systems, fire detection and smoke extraction systems, SCADA infrastructure, and radio announcement systems.
Toll collection operations are also carried out through an advanced technological infrastructure, including 20 toll plazas and 24 free-flow tolling systems. Connecting major industrial centres such as Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Sakarya, the project provides a resilient, sustainable, and future-ready transportation network with its modern infrastructure, strong operational capacity, and intelligent transportation applications.
