Transportation networks are often termed the lifeline of a country’s economy. In times of crises, transport can be a personal lifeline for people trying to get to safety. It is therefore imperative that our mobility systems are efficient, resistant to shocks, and available at all times, whether it is for the movement of people or of goods. This focus on resilient and safe transport systems is central to this year’s ITS European Congress discussions, where experts are exploring innovative solutions. Intelligent Transport Systems, thanks in large part to data-driven intelligence, are leading the creation of safe, adaptable, secure and sustainable transport ecosystems.
ITS relies on reliable and interoperable data from various sources, including road infrastructure elements and road users to build resilient mobility networks. The ability of transport systems and services to withstand disruptions is frequently tested by evolving mobility needs, particularly in more densely populated urban areas, accelerating digital transformation, and the fallout of climate change. Advanced modelling (for instance with digital twins) and AI-driven simulations, in combination with quality data, help in anticipating disruptions which may be caused by traffic congestion, infrastructure failures, or cyber threats.
Cybersecurity is emerging as a vital pillar of transport resilience. As mobility becomes increasingly digitalised and connected, new vulnerabilities come to the fore. A resilient digital infrastructure that is impervious to cyberattacks is necessary for the smooth running of smart traffic management, connected vehicles, and automated public transport systems. However, infrastructure and technology are not the sole factors determining transport resilience; good governance, regulatory frameworks, public-private partnerships and social equity are also equally important. Governments are taking note and putting the topic of transport resilience high on their agendas.
Experience Resilience in Action
The ITS European Congress includes the topic of ‘Resilient and safe mobility for today and of the future’ in its programme, with Plenary 2: Resilient by Design – Shaping a Competitive Mobility Value Chain leading the conversation on how Europe’s transport and logistics ecosystems can adapt to environmental, technological, and geopolitical challenges. This session will bring together experts to discuss cross-sector collaboration, digital infrastructure resilience, and supply chain security as key drivers of a competitive and future-proof mobility ecosystem.
Beyond discussions and presentations, attendees can witness transport resilience firsthand through a technical visit to Seville’s Mobility Management Centers. These centres leverage advanced traffic management strategies and real-time data to ensure seamless and adaptive transport operations, even in disruptive conditions. By integrating intelligent monitoring, incident response, and predictive analytics, they provide a practical demonstration of how cities can enhance mobility resilience in a rapidly evolving landscape.
At the Congress, experts from research, industries, governments, and innovators will come together to look at the intersection of technological, environmental and societal challenges and opportunities in establishing resilience in transport and mobility networks.
