The city of Istanbul is one of Turkey’s leading pilot cities where Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) technologies are being tested. These systems aim to increase traffic safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort by enabling real-time communication between vehicles and infrastructure.
In line with the targets of the Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy Document, vehicles and infrastructure interact with each other in test areas established around Istanbul, laying the foundations of a new generation of transportation experience. These pilot applications work in integration with signalisation systems, road smart sensors, and Variable Message Systems (VMS) to provide dynamic traffic management, accident prevention, and road optimisation.
"In Istanbul, connected mobility systems, intelligent and safe road infrastructure aim to ensure safe and efficient transportation throughout the city. By integrating cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS), automation in public transport and smart infrastructure, innovative solutions are being delivered for urban mobility. The ITS European Congress 2026 will be an opportunity for our colleagues to experience these implementations on-site and to exchange knowledge that will accelerate innovation across all European cities."
Istanbul also hosts Turkey’s first driverless metro line. These lines, equipped with artificial-intelligence-supported and connected control systems, smart sensors, and high-resolution cameras, provide efficiency in urban public transportation with features such as increased service frequency, high passenger capacity, and fast emergency response.
Through these pioneering applications, Istanbul is carrying transportation into the future, where automation, communication, and cooperation redefine the way people and goods move safely and efficiently.
